Skincare Ingredients You Should Know About

These good-for-you ingredients make caring for your skin simple.

In the world of skincare, it’s pretty easy to get overwhelmed. Every store has shelves of products, each claiming to keep your skin youthful and glowy while reducing wrinkles and providing a daily dose of nourishment.

While your skincare routine is one of the most important rituals you have (taking steps to care for your skin now helps you protect it for years to come), you don’t need a 12-step routine, and many products out there are packed with potentially harmful ingredients.

At Standard Dose, we believe in keeping things simple and beneficial. Which is why we recommend a minimal, yet effective routine that harnesses the power of plant-based ingredients. Here are a few we think you should know about:

Jojoba Oil
An antibacterial and antioxidant-rich oil, jojoba is known for being ultra soothing. Extracted from the seeds of the jojoba shrub, it’s often used to moisturize the skin, treat acne, and minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. A few of its other qualities? Reducing redness and keeping skin feeling calm.

Rosehip Oil
Harvested from the seeds of rose bushes, rosehip oil is a rich source of vitamin A and works to soften skin, repair damage, and reduce the appearance of those wrinkles and scars. It’s also incredibly hydrating and brightening, making it a great ingredient for face and body oils.

Hyaluronic Acid
You’ve probably heard of hyaluronic acid before, but did you know it can be made from either animal-derived or plant-based ingredients? At Standard Dose, we only carry products made with hyaluronic acid that’s plant-based.

So, what is hyaluronic acid exactly? It’s a substance that your body produces naturally, and it helps keep your skin hydrated and flexible (meaning less wrinkles and an easier time bouncing back from scarring). In skincare products, it has a similar effect, locking in moisture, increasing skin’s resilience, and promoting a smoother skin texture.

Squalane
Squalane is another ingredient that can be derived from either animal byproducts or plants! You know where we stand on that one…

Plant-derived squalane is a moisturizing ingredient that delivers maximum hydration. It has a weightless and non-oily feeling on skin, and fosters a healthier complexion by promoting skin microbiome diversity. Just don’t confuse it with squalene, which is traditionally harvested from shark liver and is known to clog pores.

Aloe Vera
A vitamin-rich plant, aloe vera is known for its healing properties. You’ll typically find it in skincare products for the face (there’s also many hair products that include this ingredient), as it helps moisturize dry skin, soothe irritation, and treat sunburn. Bring along products with aloe vera on your next vacation, to help you revive your skin after sun exposure.

Sea Buckthorn Oil
Used for thousands of years as a way to relieve different ailments, Sea Buckthorn Oil comes from a small berry shrub found in coastal regions in both Europe and Asia. Packed with nutrients like omega 3, omega 6, vitamin C, and more, it helps heal skin, promotes the production of collagen, and works to keep acne at bay.

The next time you’re searching for skincare, turn to our selection of effective, carefully vetted products. We do the guesswork for you, so you know you’re getting the best of the best, not drugstore formulas packed with ingredients that aren’t just unnecessary, but potentially even harmful.
